The Gong

Visualization for relaxation and focus

Visualize yourself sitting in the centre of the great hall of an old but beautifully maintained temple. To your left, the hall is completely open to a courtyard that is filled with a variety of flowering plants. You can also hear, but not see, a small fountain. At the front of the hall there is a raised platform upon which sits a large, silver gong.

Sit in silence for a few moments listening to the fountain and inhaling the scent of the plants.

Now imagine that a person enters the room, stands in front of the gong, and begins to strike it at regular intervals. You count 15 seconds between each strike.

Each time the gong is struck its clear tone rings throughout the room, fading only when the gong finally stops vibrating a few seconds before the next strike.

Imagine yourself sitting in the centre of the space, listening to the sound of the gong ring then fade then ring again, counting the 15 seconds in between each strike.

Stay with this image as long as you like.
