How many sessions does it take to work on a specific issue?

My view on this has changed a wee bit, so I decided to update this post.

I realize that for people looking for a concrete number, “It depends” is an unsatisfactory answer, but it really does depend.

Asking how many sessions does it take for a specific issue is a bit like asking, “How long does it take to get to Ottawa?” It depends on a number of factors. Where are you starting from? Belleville, about 200 kilometres away, or Vancouver, which is about 3,500 kilometres away on the west coast? Are you travelling by car, bicycle, or train? Are the roads or train tracks in good condition? Is it flat land between where you are and Ottawa or will you have to go over mountains and through marshes? Is it bright sunny weather the whole way or will there be thunderstorms or blizzards to get through?

And it’s not just about what you are doing in the sessions. What you do during the day can also help the process. If you take the time to relax and do things like go for walks, listen to music that soothes you, or meditate, it can only help.

So don’t be too concerned with the number of sessions. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution because we are all starting from different places based on our life journeys and experiences. If it takes you seven sessions to get to the place you want to be, that doesn’t mean that you’re “slow”, “not spiritual”, or “not focusing hard enough”. And, on the other hand, if you had the intention of booking four sessions, but truly feel after two, or maybe even only one, that you are in a good place on the subject you were focusing on, then that’s fine as well.
